The Weeknd—aka Abel Tesfaye—isn’t just a musician; he’s a global phenomenon. With his distinctive voice, innovative sound, and boundary-pushing music videos, he has created some of the most memorable tracks of the past decade. But of course, it wouldn’t be The Weeknd without a bit of controversy. Let’s dive into his top 10 songs, the controversies surrounding them, and why he's still the king of pop. 👑🎧
1. Blinding Lights (2019) 🌟💡
"Blinding Lights" isn’t just a song—it’s a cultural movement. With its throwback ‘80s vibe and catchy chorus, it became a global anthem. It even broke records on Billboard, staying in the top 10 for weeks. But what really sparked conversations was its controversial music video, where The Weeknd uses an overdose and a series of violent actions to highlight the dark side of fame and addiction. Fans were shocked—but loved the bold statement. 🎶⚡
2. Save Your Tears (2020) 💔💋
"Save Your Tears" is a bittersweet track about lost love. The accompanying music video featuring a plastic surgery mask has sparked debates. Some fans felt it was a metaphor for how fame distorts personal identity. Others wondered whether it was a jab at Hollywood beauty standards. Either way, it’s an earworm that you can’t escape.
3. Starboy (feat. Daft Punk) (2016) 🚗💥
Collaborating with Daft Punk, The Weeknd created a song that blends electronic beats with his signature voice. "Starboy" celebrates the artist’s new persona and unapologetic rise to fame. Some critics accused him of selling out and abandoning his roots, while others praised it as a fresh evolution of his sound. It’s a controversial track, but undeniably a hit.
4. The Hills (2015) 🌆🔪
"The Hills" is a dark and moody anthem that dives deep into drug use, toxic relationships, and celebrity culture. The song’s rawness sparked debates about The Weeknd's portrayal of self-destructive behavior. Fans loved the intensity, but some felt the glorification of reckless living was a dangerous message. Regardless, "The Hills" remains one of his most unforgettable tracks.
5. Can’t Feel My Face (2015) 🔥💃
This funky pop song about feeling addicted to love quickly became a global hit. While many just enjoyed the infectious beat, some critics thought it was a thinly-veiled reference to drug addiction. The Weeknd responded to the rumors by saying it was about being consumed by a relationship. Either way, it remains one of his most iconic songs.
6. In the Night (2015) 🌙✨
This haunting track from Beauty Behind the Madness tells the story of someone living a double life, dealing with fame, and personal darkness. While some saw it as a critique of celebrity culture, others felt it was too dark and didn’t offer a hopeful message. But hey, sometimes The Weeknd's fans love the drama!
7. After Hours (2020) 🖤🔪
This song from the album of the same name signified a new era for The Weeknd, with darker beats and a mature perspective on relationships. The controversy surrounding the song and its music video was centered on the vulgar lyrics, mixed with elements of regret and self-doubt. Some listeners didn’t vibe with this more self-loathing approach, but for others, it was pure art.
8. Heartless (2019) 💔💔
With this track, The Weeknd went all-in on the toxic relationship narrative. He’s left brokenhearted but is still partying in the aftermath. The controversy here? Some believed he was perpetuating toxic love and unhealthy behavior, while others saw it as a relatable reflection of modern relationships. Either way, "Heartless" hit number one on the charts and stayed there for weeks.
9. I Feel It Coming (feat. Daft Punk) (2016) 🌙🌌
"I Feel It Coming" takes on a softer, romantic vibe, mixing The Weeknd’s smooth vocals with Daft Punk’s signature beats. It’s been praised as a sexy track that oozes romantic chemistry, but some critics thought it was too predictable. The controversy? Some felt the song lacked The Weeknd’s usual edgy vibe, but it still topped the charts for weeks.
10. Pray for Me (with Kendrick Lamar) (2018) 🙏💯
This powerful collaboration with Kendrick Lamar for the Black Panther soundtrack was nothing short of legendary. The song discusses the struggles of being a hero and the inner battles we all face. While it received massive praise, some fans weren’t happy with The Weeknd’s lyrics about inner conflict—saying it was a bit too self-righteous. But, like it or not, it was a powerful anthem for the ages.
